Set up Goals
Use Goals to help you measure how your Experiences are influencing user behaviors.
Table of Contents
Goals track whether users complete a specific action after seeing a Flow or Embed — like finishing signup, entering payment info, or trying a new feature. Attach a Goal to an Experience to measure how effectively it drives user behavior.
Prerequisites
- At least one published Flow or Embed
- Events or user properties being sent to Appcues (see Events overview or Click to Track)
Create a Goal
- Go to Metrics > Goals and click Create a Goal.
- Enter a name and description. Choose criteria the user must meet — either a tracked event (e.g., "Entered Credit Card Info") or a user property (e.g., "Entered Credit Card Info = True").
- Click Save.

Attach a Goal to a Flow or Embed
- Open the Experience and go to Settings.
- Find the Goal section and click Choose An Existing Goal, then select the Goal you created. You can also click Create goal to build one directly from this page — just confirm you aren't duplicating an existing Goal.
- Set a Conversion timeframe between 1 and 90 days. This is how long a user has after seeing the Experience to complete the Goal for it to count as a conversion.

Confirm it worked
Open the Experience's Analytics page. The Goal section shows how many users who saw the Flow/Embed also completed the Goal within the conversion timeframe.

Track overall Goal performance
Go to Metrics > Goals and click any individual Goal. You'll see the total number of users who completed it and a list of recent completions — independent of any specific Flow or Embed.
Manage Goals
Goals are either Active (tracking new completions) or Inactive (no longer tracking, but historical data is preserved).
To change a Goal's status, go to Metrics > Goals, find the Goal, and click the dot menu to activate, deactivate, or delete it.

Common questions
How many Goals can I attach to an Experience?
One Goal per Experience. The same Goal can be attached to multiple Experiences. You can swap an Experience's Goal at any time to compare different outcomes.
What's the difference between Goal completion and Experience completion?
Experience completion measures whether a user interacted with it (ie. clicked a button). Goal completion measures whether the user took the specific action the Experience was designed to drive — which could happen outside the Experience entirely.
Why can't I edit a Goal?
Editing a Goal after it has been tracked would compromise historical data. Instead, deactivate the old Goal and create a new one with updated criteria.
Why is the "event" option grayed out?
You aren't sending any events to Appcues yet. See Track events in your web app to set up event tracking.
How long does a Goal track?
As long as it's active. Appcues records the first time each user meets the criteria. Deactivating pauses tracking; reactivating resumes it. Historical data is never lost.
